Did you know that God likes parties?
The Old Testament law included regulations for personal conduct, religious observance and the offering of sacrifices. It was very serious business. However, God also commanded regular celebrations, in other words, parties.
Each year the Israelites were to set aside one tenth of their produce and consume it “in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name.” And, if a family’s tithe was just too abundant to transport to the specified place, they were to exchange it for cash and “Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord you God and rejoice.” (Deut. 14:26)
Does that not sound like God commanded his people to bring a lavish party to His house and celebrate in His presence?
God’s Law was more than rules and “thou shalt nots.” It was an expression of his holiness, his character, and it was a balanced guide for life. Parties and celebrations were most definitely part of life with God.
Over the last few days I’ve hosted a family birthday party for our son-in-law, attended a bridal shower and walked next door for a birthday party with neighbors. God was invited to join each of these celebrations, and I think he enjoyed himself. I did too.
“…for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10
Do you think of God as participating in our celebrations, appreciating humor, and generously approving of (appropriate) parties, or do you see him as serious or even stern?
Judy, loved this. God is with us always, at our parties and in the churches and wherever we go. And it was good to read this and affirm that he likes us to have fun, too!
Ditto–“party on!” The gift of laughter is right up there with Living Water–a Necessity.
Oh no. I see Him as enjoying Himself, throwing His head back in laughter with us with a big hearty laugh. Great post.
Thank you for pointing this out to us, Judy! I love to celebrate people, make them feel special . .have to think God really loves doing that too! 🙂 God bless you and lead you on to the next party!
With all that he created on earth & people that I’ve encountered (maybe including myself) …I would have to think that he has a great sense of humor mixed in with some humor I just don’t understand 😉
I agree Rosy! And I love your thought that we don’t even “get” all of the humor God has planted in his creation. Maybe I’ll watch for it!
When people try to tell me God is always serious, I ask, “Who created laughter and humor? The devil?”
God loves a party and a good sense of humor. So, party on, Judy.
Exactly! And I’m so glad, because I do love a party:)
