These first two verses of the Bible express the mastery of God and the mystery of creation.
God is the master, the creator, of the heavens and the earth. The opening verse of the Bible makes that perfectly clear. How, exactly, he created the earth is a matter of lively debate. No matter how intensely one or the other theory is put forth and believed, in my opinion it remains a mystery.
Way back in the beginning the earth did not exist like we now know it. It was clay to be sculpted into a world, a canvas to be covered with an artists work, and history to be written. Each individual on the planet lived/lives his or her own story and, in some way, contributes to history.
One of the most puzzling mysteries is how God can allow humans to sculpt cities, to create beauty using a canvas, or a garden or a home, and to live stories that make up the history of the world, and yet God is still its master. It’s mind-blowing. Where is the line between our free will and God’s sovereignty? Theologians have been pondering that questions for quite a while, and once again, no matter how passionately one or the other view is put forth, it is still a mystery.
This year is formless and empty. It is an expanse of time to be filled, a clump of clay, a blank canvas, empty pages.
What will you do with it?

I will offer the same answer that Ezekiel did when God asked whether the dry bones could live: “O Lord God, You know.” (Ezekiel 37:3)
Sounds like that’s a yes, Larry! Yes, God knows. I wonder if we will learn the answers in heaven to all of the mysteries that we live with on earth. Or maybe we won’t care.
