Robin Inspired Gratitude

There is a mama robin raising a chick or two in the nest she created right above a light on our deck.  The last time we observed this scenario, in the exact same spot, I identified a little too much with the mama robin as she literally launched her chicks out of her nest. We were about to take our oldest child to college.  (Read about that here.)

Now, a number of years later, we have delivered all three children to college, coached them through some rough spots, seen them all graduate, and we have happily celebrated two marriages. Last week we cheered for our son and his fiance as they graduated from medical school, and this weekend we will joyfully celebrate their marriage.  I don’t know what it is about our boys, but they like to graduate and get married a week or two later.  (Read about that here.)

Our resident robin this year reminds me of all that has happened since I experienced the previous round of robin mama drama.  My three children have spread their wings, they have met their spouses and they are all growing in skill and wisdom.

It is a wonderful time of life to watch so intimately.

As I observe them grow, my faith expands. Having experienced the challenges and rewards of these years, and now celebrating with our children, fills me with immense gratitude and humility. The more I experience God’s loving care, his faithfulness, his patience, his grace, and his goodness, the more thankful I am and the less I take any credit.

All I can say is thank you, Father, for your love and for your lavish blessings.

And I continue to watch with interest!

“How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”  Psalm 36:7
